Swimming Janus Scene

Post by fastenjaw » Tue May 18, 2010 2:27 am

I saw the progressive swimming Janus scene on Youtube today! :) Very nice work guys! However I noticed one minor thing about it after I left a comment. It looks like there is some kind of skipping going on near the very end. It is the part where Janus lifts his front left paw above his head and then sweeps it down. It looks like it all takes place in 2 or 3 frames. The thing is the way it swings makes it look like its skipping. Maybe if it didn't move so fast? Maybe add more frames? That is the only flaw I can see at the moment.

Thanks Fasten! Yeah I think we actually saw that too, and Marji pointed out that it may be a youtube thing. Apparently it often misses or skips the last few frames. Which is a real pain, it may not be a problem for live action but it really shows on animation :P

Yeah, YouTube ate the last couple frames. I'd never noticed it doing that before, but now that I know, I'll export anything for YouTube with a couple of extra "flat" frames at the end to give them something unimportant to eat.

But yeah, YouTube's problem, not the original.

Whoa actually I think I see what Fasten means and it's not Youtube (I don't think?)

I don't see it in the roughs but that may be just that it gets so faint at the end....but in the inks (and I can't tell in the colors cause it cuts off) there is indeed a little bulge that could be a paw or an elongated muscle or something right at the end. It does look like he's lifting his paw above his head and it kinda flickers.

Good eye Fasten XD

Marj, can you go to the originals and see if you can figure out what's up with it there? I'm not seeing it, so I'm going to have to have it pointed out in the raws.

:) No problem. Glad to have helped! Here is a picture of the paw above his head.

http://s153.photobucket.com/albums/s206 ... ashpaw.png

You can see that his front left paw appears briefly above him. As he sweeps it down, it is nearly instant. Actually, the more I see the animation play, the more it appears and dissappears too fast. So there may be a smoothness issue with that leg. That problem is in all 3 progression segments in the video.

Ahh I see what you mean - sorry I thought you meant that the last few frames skipped or jumped ^^

I wonder if it'd be as simple as just erasing that paw? That'd just mean editing a frame or two in the final colors.

If he is supposed to push down on the water to propel himself up, then the paw should not sweep down as fast. Maybe it could come up earlier so you have more room for frames. But that has to be synced with his body movements. You could erase it. However I don't know how it will look without running it a few times after the edit. Also you may still need to draw a paw or two so it is smoother.

Styg, the whole panel itself didn't jump or skip. If it did, I didn't notice it. The paw movement moving real fast is what caught my eye.

She's just talking about erasing it when it's over his head -- that'll make it seem like a slower movement, since what's going on when it's visible under his body doesn't seem to be the issue, only when it's above.
